Outdated PCs are reconditioned as lab terminals with performances comparable to the level of commonoffice machines.

Companies, banks, foundations and institutions, find hardware dismissal as worthy chance to re-use, out of kindness, their material to a social purpose instead of sending it to recycling centers.

Installation is simplified by the industrialization of terminal set-up processes, through documented procedures that can be followed by students, with no specific skills requirements. In addition, thanks to the fact that the only computer running the software (Operating system and applications) is only the teacher’s one, deploying a whole lab only requires setting up a single computer.

Tutte le postazioni utilizzate dagli studenti sono molto semplici da sostituire poiché, non avendo alcun software a bordo, sono tutte funzionalmente uguali. Di conseguenza, escluso il trasporto, la sostituzione viene fatta in pochi minuti. Gli interventi di manutenzione lato software vengono effettuati tramite l’accesso remoto al laboratorio (in maniera sicura via VPN), permettendo un supporto rapido ed efficiente che non richiede la presenza fisica di un tecnico.
Finally, due to the above reasons, the re-installation of a whole lab requires only two hours.

Acquisition of new terminals requires no monetary cost, since hardware is obtained through donations of agencies, banks, foundations and institutions, while GNU/Linux Edubuntu, and various other types of free software used do not involve any expenses. Installation and maintenance of laboratories is carried out by students from the “Politecnico di Torino”, who win scholarships not bound on taxes.Finally, coordination and delivery of computers are realized within ordinary management activities of the town of Turin. As a consequence, the only expenses to be undergone are small purchases related to hardware integration requirements (RAM upgrades, switches...)

Employment of free software allows to install, without undergoing any license cost, various didactic application. The software collection on computers is constantly enriched and updated, following each teacher’s needs, uniformly across all the laboratories. Training of teachers on the usage of the available applications happens at a 0 cost as well, thanks to the TeachMood platform of the Piedmont region, coordinated by CSI Piemonte

Il progetto coinvolge studenti del Politecnico di Torino, vincitori di borse di studio, che hanno la possibilità di fare un’esperienza formativa sul campo. Gli studenti si sono dichiarati molto contenti dell’esperienza dimostrando un impegno e una disponibilità maggiore di quella richiesta.

Le scuole primarie e secondarie di primo grado difficilmente potrebbero ottenere questa dotazione informatica in altro modo, vista la carenza di risorse a disposizione. I costi di realizzazione, ed ancor più i costi di manutenzione di un laboratorio “tradizionale”, sono difficili da sostenere per la maggior parte delle scuole.

L’utilizzo di laboratori che impiegano software libero (sistema operativo ed applicativi) rende la scuola coerente con principi di indipendenza e neutralità delle tecnologie insegnate. Lascia la massima libertà di approfondimento della conoscenza e la massima libertà di utilizzo. Gli insegnanti e gli studenti possono utilizzare anche a casa gli stessi software. Sia nel percorso di studio, sia nel loro futuro lavorativo.

In particolare tra i referenti dei laboratori poiché dispongono dello stesso identico software a disposizione (sistema operativo ed applicativi). Con la collaborazione dei referenti anche altri docenti possono essere coinvolti: problematiche ed opportunità didattiche sono infatti territorio comune.
